Few of you asked me if lets say they are making products at home, and they want to adsure that the product is safe; what sort of test should they do.
Now when it comes to tests in terms of safety there are 2 kind of test u can do: one is patch test, and another is lab test.
Video:
Patch test is basically putting on the product the way its supposed to be used on small part of the skin, and check the response within 24 hours. If there is no any sign of allergic reaction such as redness, itchy, lebam and so on; then its ok to be used as intended. But if not ok; then just don use the product.
Now these kind of test is very individualized; coz at the end it can be ok on one person, and not so ok on another coz at the end what ingredients you are ok with, doesnt mean that the next person will be ok too.
Then next is lab test; lab test can be divided into heavy metal test, and microbiology test.
Heavy metal is to check for any adultration , while microbial is to check if there is any contamination in ur product, as well as if you preservative is strong enough to preserve ur product during ur intended shelf life.
Most of the products used in natural products are natural, and mostly in their raw form, so at times the ingredients itself is already ‘contaminated’ hence its important to do these tests.
To avoid this; its best to use cosmetic grade ingredients. Like In SoapLab Malaysia, most of our ingredients are cosmetic grade, along with tests done to ensure its safe to be used and without any contamination.
We have to do this because we have a GMP (OEM) factory, and so to make sure our products we make is Safe and passes KKM requirement; we need the ingredients to be ‘clean’
If you were to thinking to expand your business in handmade product; i suggest you take a look at this post as well. It answers everything to do with KKM and regulations
I hope this answers your question, and if you have any further question; do let me know:)
