One of the frequently asked questions i get asked all the time is how much does it cost to start making your own cosmetics in Malaysia.
Now this really depends on what do you want to start for? is it for own use? or is it for business? Because the cost can vary greatly depending on your purpose.
Lets talk about personal use first.
Personal Use
If its for personal use; you will usually start small; for one person use.
in that way; the cost can be a bit 'cheaper'. usually for hobby use i would advice that you start with bases. bases are semi finished product thats already done so you dont have to purchase the individual raw ingredient coz depending on products; some will need up to 10-12 ingredients (can be costly for hobby).
but in Soaplab; we have bases thats premade; so this is about rm 7-12 per 100g (again depending on the base).
Next; is the other raw mterials like extracts, colors and fragrances. these usually range from Rm 15-25 (again depending on the ingredients).
so the grand total for raw materials can range from Rm 10-30 depending on what products you want to make.
Now since its for personal use; sometimes its cheaper if you just reuse any container you have but if you wanted to but specific jars etc; than it can get expensive becuase most sellers have min order for packaging.
But overall; to start; its not that expensive.
as for equipments; you can aways reuse everything you have at home (yes everything that you use in the kitchen for food can be reused for cosmetic making. Just make sure to sanitize and its not rusted and you are good to go).

Business Purpose
Now if you wanted to make products for business purpose; then the price can range quite greatly as it really depends on what products you want to make; the quantity and the packaging as well.
for this i have videos on cost breakdown for individual products which you could view here.
it can get expensive if you were making a lot of products and quantity but for me; since you are 'DIY'ing; i always advice that you start with small quantity first (like maybe 10pcs) and if it sells well; only then make more.
true the individual cost per product can get expensive compared to if you make in bigger quantity; but because you are just starting; i always advice my clients to 'save' the money and make smaller quantity first coz the starting money can be used for other things like marketing and packaging etc.
You can always make more and lower your individual cost later when you are already selling well.
So i hope this helps and if you have any questions at all; please do not hesitate to ask:-)
