Soap Making Ebook For Beginner: FREE

Beginner Guide to Making Handmade Soap

To download Ebook:

Are you interested to make soaps for business? Or just for yourself and family? Well whatever the reason is for you to start making soap, you’ve come to the right place!
Welcome to Soap Lab Malaysia Handmade Soap Ebook. We have been making soaps since 2004 and would like to invite you to join our journey to discovering the process of making handmade soaps.
Soap Lab Malaysia is a one stop stop selling all the supplies to make your own soaps and cosmetics. But we are also a little different than the others. We don't only sell supplies and raw materials, we also love to teach and guide you on how to make these products safely and effectively. The best part is its all FREE and can be found in our website blog: www.soaplabmalaysia.com
Now lets start with soaps. If you are new and have not made soaps before, there are 3 methods of making soaps.
The three method of making soaps are melt & pour soap making (MP Soaps), Cold Process soap making (CP), and Hot process soap making (HP Soap).
Melt and Pour soap is made by simply melting a pre-made soap base, mixing in additives and fragrances, and pouring it into a mold to cool. Its very simple to make and its one of the best ways to make handmade soap if you are a beginner.
Cold Process soaps are created by blending exact measurements of oils or fats with a lye mixture, mixing in fragrance and additives and pouring into a prepared mold. Saponification happens right in the mold, usually in about 24 hours though the soap should cure and harden for 4 to 6 weeks before it is ready to use and sell. CP soap making is slightly more complicated and  lye handling can be dangerous too. It requires more chemistry knowledge and slight mis measurement can make the soaps unsafe to use. We in Soaplab Malaysia have classes conducted to teach this method. Click here if you are interested to learn this for Business purpose.
Hot process soaps are created by blending exact measurements of oils or fats with a lye mixture, then heating in a pot on the stove (hence, the “hot process” name). The cooking speeds the saponification process, neutralizes the soap. Once the soap “cooks” you can add fragrance and additives, and pour the soap into a mold. You may choose to cook your soap on the stove top (HP), or in the oven (ITOHP).
For this ebook; its created for beginners therefore we will concentrate on making the melt and pour soap. One of the simplest way of making soaps are the Melt and Pour method. Its safe and easy! Soap bases can be purchased from anywhere and we loved it when we started out.  Whats not o love? Its very simple to make, its colourful, I can make intricate designs , and the best thing is unlike CP soap, i can use it right away! However, after being a reseller, we found out that the soap bases sold by our suppliers are no different from the commercially available soaps; filled with chemicals and harsh surfactants. Therefore we decided to make our own soap bases. Since i am a pharmacist and learned all this in school, it was quite easy for me to modify and make my own soap bases to ensure everything in it is safe & natural ingredients for all skin type. These soap bases are now made available and sold in Soap Lab’s Store. Click here to read our journey on how we experimented and made them.
DON’T KNOW HOW TO MAKE?

As mentioned earlier making a melt and pour soap is really easy.
First you will have to make sure you have all the equipments and materials needed.
In this case you will need a bowl/jar, microwave/double boiler, spoon for mixing, a silicone mold, soap base, and additives such as fragrance/essential oil and colors.
To make:
  1. Cut the bases to small chunks according to how much you need.
  2. Melt the bases in microwave/double boiler
  3. add fragrance/essential oil and color. Mix well
  4. Pour into a mold. Spray the surface of the soap with rubbing alcohol if there are any bubbles.
  5. Leave to harden; usually about 2-3 hours. Can be used right away
Here is the simplest video on how to make your own soap. Its so simple just like ABC! All you need is few ingredients and you are good to go!

Currently we have about 17 types of soap bases. All used for different skin types. Below are the types of soap bases available:

NOT SURE WHEN TO USE THEM?
Here is a simple guide:
For Normal Skin:
Lucky you! You can use any of the soap bases!
For Oily & Acne Skin:
Honey Soap Base, Aloe Vera Soap Base, Papaya Soap Base, Green Tea Soap Base (from both the generations)
For Dry & Sensitive Skin
All the second (2nd) generation soap base
After choosing your bases, you have an option to add additives. Additives are ingredients that you add to make your soap more attractive. Below are the common additives been used:
FRAGRANCE OIL & ESSENTIAL OIL
As for Essential Oil (EO) & Fragrance Oil (FO), you can add any EO & FO. Just make sure that they are suitable for skin. The problem is soap making in Malaysia is that we are in the infant stage, therefore its very difficult to find a FO or EO thats suitable for skin as most sold in Malaysia is produced for Candle making and Aromatherapy purpose. Those FO & EO usually contains alcohol that may cause redness on skin or other skin reactions.
You should always check with the seller to be sure that the fragrance you want to use is not only skin safe, but appropriate for soap making. You cannot use candle or potpourri fragrances in your soap. Your supplier needs to follow all International Fragrance Association Guidelines for your soap fragrance oil.
Therefore if you do want to add these; please find out if its suitable for skin or get it from us in Soap Lab Malaysia as our fragrances are specifically for skin and cosmetic use only. Ours are mostly from our USA supplier therefore its all for cosmetic grade.
Which to use? EO or FO?
If you are not sure what is the difference between EO & FO as well as when you should use them, please click here.
COLOURS
Colorant that you use for soap making cannot be food colouring. The reason is because food colours can at times stain skin and its not stable in soap pH. There are cosmetic colorants that are available. Most of these colorants are Micas and Pigments that comes from rocks or volcanic earth. Whether you choose to use micas, pigments, or oxides, buy the best quality you can afford. Shop online to find the best suppliers with the most consistent results and order small amount or sample pack if you are not sure of how a color looks.
You should always check with the seller to be sure that the colorant you want to use is not only skin safe, but appropriate for soapmaking. Though technically non-toxic, Crayola crayons and RIT clothing dyes are not appropriate coloring choices for your soap.
We in Soap Lab Malaysia have got some colours for you to choose from (see picture picture below). All are naturally derived Mica that is from either rocks or volcanic earth. To read more about the difference please click here.
FRESH INGREDIENTS
Because of the nature of soaps and cosmetics; its not advisable to add any fresh ingredients into soaps and cosmetics because it will get spoilt fast.
My usual general rule of thumb is this; if you will not eat the food that expires in a few days (at room temperature), you cant use the soap and cosmetic as well. We have a write up about why here. (Click here)
COSMECEUTICALS
These are medicine like chemicals that is added into soaps or cosmetics to give a 'sure' effects. Its like medicine thats approved to be used in cosmetics where you must use according to the dosage advised. If you put less or more it can be dangerous.
Below is the picture of the cosmeceuticals we have in Soap Lab and when to use them. If you want to make whitening products; please click here to find out the extra precautions you need to take.
So basically these are the things you will need to consider when making soaps. It can be a little overwhelming at first but don’t worry. It is not as hard as it looks like. Try it out :-)
