How to List Ingredient on Your Handmade Cosmetic Product Label

If you are selling products; you need to list your product on your label.
Unfortunately many are not sure how to do so therefore ill try to explain it as simple as possible here.

When your purchase a product; you will notice that the products contains ingredient list.

So how do you know which ingredient goes first and whats after that?

Most of the time; its required that you list your product according to the percentage its added in. so lets say if you are making a lip balm and this is what you added in;
1) 30g Beeswax
2) 30g Cocoa Butter
3) 10g Shea Butter
4) 20g Castor Oil
5) 1g flavoring oil; cotton candy
6) 10g Red Iron Oxide Color Pigment.
7) 1g Vitamin E Oil
8) 1g Peppermint Essential Oil

This is how you convert it into percentage:

1) Calculate the total weight of ingredients ( in the example above its 103g).
2) Convert the list to percentage:
1) 30g Beeswax (30/103) x 100 = 29%
2) 30g Cocoa Butter (30/103) x 100 =29%
3) 10g Shea Butter (10/103) x 100 = 9.7%
4) 20g Castor Oil (20/103) x 100 = 19.4%
5) 1g flavoring oil; cotton candy (1/103) x 100 =0.97%
6) 10g Red Iron Oxide Color Pigment.(10/103) x 100 = 9.7%
7) 1g Vitamin E Oil (1/103) x 100 =0.97%
8) 1g Peppermint Essential Oil (1/103) x 100 =0.97%

Now to write the ingredient you will have to rearrange the list according to the highest percentage to the lowest:
1) Beeswax
2) Cocoa Butter
3) Castor Oil
4) Shea Butter
5) Red Iron Oxide
6) Flavoring Oil (cotton Candy)
7) Vitamin E Oil
8) Peppermint Oil

If possible list them in INCI name (usually found in web) such as this:
1) Beeswax (Cera alba)
2) Cocoa Butter (Theobroma Cacao Seed Butter)
3) Castor Oil (Ricinus Communis Seed Oil)
4) Shea Butter (Butyrospermum Parkii)
5) Red Iron Oxide
6) Flavoring Oil (cotton Candy)
7) Vitamin E Oil (Tocopheryl Acetate)
8) Peppermint Oil (Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Extract)

Now the beauty of it is if the ingredient is 1% and below; you do not have to follow the ranking. As long as its 1% and below you can arrange it anywhere in the 1% list. So lets say the vitamin e oil is 0.8%, and you added water that is 1%. You can still list vitamin e above water even though its supposed to be lower from the percentage. But you can list is as you like if the ingredient is lesser than 1%.

So this is how you list the ingredients in your label. Hope this helps.
