Hi all. Today im gona guide you guys how to write labels in your handmade soaps/ cosmetics.

I know that when you purchase: most of the time the names you are using is lay man term. Lay men means something that we use in daily speaking, writing etc. (example: coconut oil, strawberry etc)

When you label your products; you cant use the laymen term.

Yes it does feel good putting the normal common name so that your customers recognizes it but if you were to follow the proper rules and regulations by regulators (this is for all countries: FDA, BIRO pharmacy etc); you must put inci name.

What is INCI name?

INCI is the short form for international Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients. This is the ‘scientific’ name that is recognized by regulatory bodies all around the world and requires you to list this in your products.

How to List INCI Name?

  1. The first thing youve got to do is to get your label ingredients right. Write down all the ingredients in and arrange it according to the highest amount found in the product first. Ive written an article on it here before on how to do this. Click here
  2. once its confirmed; change the ‘layman’ ingredients to INCI name. You may download our ebook on full list of INCI below:

Example of product with INCI:

Body wash using Strawberry extract, strawberry fragrance oil, pink color, and soaplab’s coconut liquid base:

Strawberry Pink Body Wash

Aqua, Cocos nucifera (Coconut) oil, Olea Europaea (olive) Oil, Glycerin,, Fragaria vesca (strawberry) fruit extract, Potassium Hydroxide, Mineral Mica, Parfum

Hope this post helps you guys to create a better product labels for your business:)

Even though you are just starting out and haven’t really become ‘big’. Its better to have a proper labeling from the start so that you do not face major ‘rebranding’ in the future.
