How To Recycle Plastic Jars & Bubblewrap By Making Honeycomb Soap

Hi all; in today’s recycle series ill be showing you guys how to make ‘honey’ soap by recycling SoapLab’s Jars and bubblewraps (the ones we use to wrap your ingredients from SoapLab).

For today; we are making a honeycomb looking soap. 

Below are the recipe and the video on how to use these jars and bubblewrap. Hope you find it useful.. 

Duration:

Preparation Time : 20 minutes

Total Time : 40 minutes

Ingredients:

1. 94.5g Coconut Oil 
2. 94.5g Olive Oil 
3. 31.5g Castor Oil 
4. 94.5g Palm Oil 
5. 46.5g SoapLab’s Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) Pastilles 
6. 46.5g Distilled Water  
7. 31.5g Fresh Milk 
8. 22.5 Oatmeal, Milk & Honey Fragrance Oil 
9. 8g Yellow Mica
10. 10g Almond Oil 
11. 10-20 sprays of Rubbing Alcohol
12. An empty 500g Tub
13. Some Bubble Wrap  

Equipments You Will Need:

1. Heat Resistant Containers
2. Spatula/ Stirrer (Can Also be kitchen Spoon)
3. Weighing Scale (Digital)

How to Make 

Visual Guide 

1. Combine lye flakes with distilled water carefully. Wear gloves & long sleeves to avoid backsplash getting in contact with exposed skin. 
   
   
   
2. Slowly mix with a whisk until all the lye flakes have dissolved in the distilled water. Solution may become hot, do be cautious. 
   
   
   
3. To bring lye solution to room temperature, place container in a water bath. 
   
   
   
4. Take your empty 500g tub and clean it thoroughly. Use rubbing alcohol if necessary. 
   
   
   
5. Take some bubble wrap that may have come in your packaging and trace the outline of the tub onto the bubble wrap. Then using a pair of scissors, cut two of these out. 
   
   
   
6. Place one of the cut out circle at the bottom of the tub, textured side up. Next, roll some more bubble wrap and line the inside of the tub, again, textured side on the inside. Cut the bubble wrap to fit the height of the tub.
   
   
   
7. Separately, pour your Oil Mix into a heat resistant mixing container. Combine room temperature Lye Water  with the oil mix.
   
   
   
8. Next, use a whisk and mix until it reaches thin trace. Timing of this may vary as the faster you mix, the faster solution will saponify and reaches thin trace. 
   
   
   
9. Once there, add in fresh milk carefully. 
   
   
   
10. Next, add in Oatmeal, Milk & Honey Fragrance Oil. For this, use a pipette for easy measuring & dispensing.
    
    
    
11. Add in Yellow Mica that has been diluted with some almond oil. Mix everything with a whisk. 
    
    
    
12. Pour mixture into the prepared “mold” earlier. Pour slowly as mixture might still be hot. 
    
    
    
13. On top of the soap add the cut out circle bubble wrap, again, the textured side being in contact with the soap. Then leave soap to harden for 12 to 48 hours.
    
    
    
     
14. Once harden, using a box cutter, cut a slit down the tub to free the soap. Pull soap away from tub like so. 
    
    
    
15. Peel the bubble wrap from the soap, this will leave beautiful indentations on the soap, resembling honeycombs :) 
    
    
    
16. Using a normal kitchen knife, cut the soap to your desired size. 
    
    
    
17. Soap will need 4 weeks to cure. Place in a well ventilated space till then. After 4 weeks, the soap will be ready!

3. Make sure all your utensils and work surface is clean and sterilise as dirty area and utensils can reduce shelf life of scrub

5. If applying on face, avoid citrus based or sandalwood essential oil as Malaysian weather will cause your skin to be easily sun burnt. Wear sun protection if add these Essential oils.
