Light Baby Lotion: How To Make

Handmade Organic Baby Lotion Malaysia
Handmade Baby Lotion
After about three months of using the Jojoba Oil & Shea Butter Lotion that i made for my baby (7 months old) who had very flaky dry skin (especially buttocks area) , I'm ready to venture to a lighter lotion for her. The jojoba Oil lotion i made was really good for her and i can happily say that her skin is as soft as a newborn baby, almost 100% cleared from the dry skin flakes.

That lotion was for beginner; it was a  basic lotion with no additives. This time around i decided to experiment more and want to use all those new extracts we have in Soap Lab.

First of all, before doing anything. We will have to imagine how you want your lotion to be and what is the purpose of your lotion? I want a lotion that can be used on whole body, nothing too thick, and it shouldn't feel greasy especially since we are 'blessed' with burning hot weather now. I also want something that contains soothing properties and something thats very moisturising for my baby.

So lets start with the 'feel' of the lotion. Since i don't want it to be very greasy, i would like to use a light weight oil such as apricot kernel oil. Its an oil thats generally suitable for dry and sensitive skin, or any normal skin as well. As for the butter, I'm going with Mango Butter. Out of all the butters available in soap lab, this is the 'driest' feel butter with a lot of extra properties that fits the objective of the lotion. Also, since I plan to make a rather 'glidey' and easily applied lotion,  I'm going to use Cetyl Alcohol as my thickener for this recipe. In the previous lotion recipe i had used stearic acid which made the lotion much thicker (to a cream consistency) and stickier (which was beneficial at that time because i wanted something that would stick to my baby's bum bum to prevent diaper rash).

Now as for additives, ill be adding Vitamin E oil about 2% to prevent my lotion to go rancid. Apricot Kernel Oil have got medium short life; about a year therefore to prevent it from getting rancid too fast, I'm adding Vitamin E. Click here to find out how Vitamin E works as antioxidant.

I'm also adding 0.5% allantoin because of its wonderful moisture binging properties. Allantoin is a keratolytics as well therefore it will result in softer keratin and ultimately a very moisturised skin. Ill be doing a post on Allontoin soon.

anyways, the other additives ill be putting in are: Preservatives (DMDM Hydantoin) 1%, Glycerin as humectant (2%), Cetyl Alcohol as thickener 3%, Emulsifying Wax (to mix water and oil phase), my favorite Baby Fresh Scent (smells like J&J green body wash), and Bubblegum orange Liquid Pigment. Feel free to change the last two ingredients to anything else you want:-)

Lets start cooking! Divide you ingredients as follow- to make 500g lotion

Water Phase
  1. Distilled Water -790g
  2. Glycerin -10g
  3. Allantoin -2.5g
Oil Phase
  1. Apricot Kernel Oil -65g
  2. Mango Butter- 25g
  3. Vitamin E Oil-10g
  4. Emulsifying Wax -25g
  5. Cetyl Alcohol -15g
Additives:
  1. DMDM Hydantoin-5g
  2. Baby Fresh Scent (as needed)
  3. Pink Bubblegum Liquid Color (as needed)
Instructions:
  1. Prepare the oil phase and water phase.
Add all oil phase in one heat proof container
  2. Heat both up. I usually heat them up together in the microwave until all the oil phase is melted. as for water phase i usually just warm it up in the microwave for a minute.
  3. Mix both the phases together and use the handblender to blend them. Since it is still hot it wouldn't be solidified. Leave it to cool in room temperature. If you don't have patience like me, put it in the fridge for 10 minutes.
Add water phase into oil phase
